ISLE
OF MULL 2005 - RETURN OF THE STING
Please keep this
with you except during the event
PLEASE
READ THIS SECTION BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE!
- The LAMM
Event Centre is on the Isle of Mull at Torosay Castle
- Ferries depart
on Friday at: 14:00 (950), 16:00 (950), 18:00 (950), 20:30
(950) and finally 22:30 (500)
- Ferries depart
on Saturday at 07:30 (950) and ONLY IF YOU HAVE A TRAVEL
DISASTER at 09:30.
Note that ferry
passenger capacities are in brackets. The ferry journey is 45
minutes. OUR MARSHALL WILL HAVE GIVEN YOU ONE RETURN PASSENGER
FERRY TICKET PER COMPETITOR. Additional tickets can be purchased
for £6 each. If you lose it you will need to purchase a replacement
from our Information Desk or the ferry ticket office.
YOU SHOULD
PARK HERE ONLY IF YOU ARE RETURNING TO COLLECT YOUR CAR BY SUNDAY
EVENING. OTHERWISE, PLEASE PARK YOUR CAR SOMEWHERE NEAR THE FERRY
TERMINAL. PLEASE NOTE THAT PARKING IN THE CENTRE OF OBAN IS VERY
SCARCE.
It is a 1KM,
20 mins, walk to the Calmac ferry terminal from the car park
and you need to be there 10 mins before the sailing, so LEAVE
HERE at least 30 minutes before a sailing. Food is available
on the ferry but be aware of the possibility of queues on busy sailings.
Wilfs will be providing their usual fayre until late on Friday night
and early on Saturday morning.
BIKES -
If you wish to take a bike to the island, visit our parking marshal
and purchase a return bike ticket for £2. If we have
run out of bike tickets, purchase from the Calmac ticket office.
You must not take your bike if you are only travelling to the island
on Saturday morning.
---------------------
END OF SECTION - NOW PREPARE TO LEAVE FOR THE ISLE OF MULL
------------------------
CATCHING THE FINAL 22:30 FERRY - DO YOU WANT FOOD AT WILFS WHEN
YOU ARRIVE?
Members of the public will have priority. If there are an unpredictably
large number of members of the public intending to catch the 22:30,
it is possible that the ferry will overfill. If this happens a few
of you may not be able to travel to the Isle of Mull on Friday evening.
We have done our best to persuade as many as possible to arrive
early for the LAMM this year. If you are turned back from the ferry
we suggest that the car driver returns to the LAMM car park for
the car and picks up the passengers from the Ferry Terminal. Then
see the note below about camping near Oban.
Those of you
on the 22:30 ferry will arrive at the Event Centre at about
23:45. Our caterers, Wilfs, will be at the Event Centre and
will be pleased to provide food until 01:00 but please mention
your requirement to our marshal who will be at the foot of the ferry
gangway as you embark. He will keep a rough count and telephone
the numbers through to Wilfs.
ARRIVING
AT THE PARKING AFTER 22:00 ON FRIDAY - CAMPSITE NEAR OBAN
The last ferry leaves for the Isle of Mull at 22:30 on Friday.
You should find local accommodation around Oban and return here
on Saturday morning, ready to walk to the ferry by 07:00. We
have arranged the option for you to camp at an excellent campsite
3 miles south of Oban. Return to Argyll Square in the centre of
the town and follow the brown tourist road signs south along a narrow
coast road to Gallanach Campsite (also signed sometimes as Oban
Caravan & Camping Park, NOT Glenshallach Campsite). Please
visit the white house on the centre of the campsite and pay for
your camping on Friday night even if it is late. The managers, Judy
and Howard Jones, would prefer this to being woken early on
Saturday morning. A nice spot to camp is in a small enclosure opposite
the campsite and overlooking the Sound of Kerrera.
DIRECTIONS
FROM LAMM CAR PARK TO THE FERRY
If you are leaving the LAMM car park before 16:00 on Friday please
walk out along the dirt track to the main road then turn right towards
the centre of Oban. After 16:00 you may proceed to the NW corner
of the car park and take a shorter route between school buildings
that leads to a minor road. TL for 100M to the main road. TR and
walk 600M towards the Centre of Oban. At Argyll Square, a large
roundabout, take the third exit, ignoring the sign on the left for
vehicles heading to the ferry. When you reach the harbour wall,
TL and follow signs to Oban Ferry Terminal.
DIRECTIONS
FROM FERRY ARRIVAL TO TOROSAY
On disembarking, turn left along the main road. After 500M the road
rises for 200M and then bear left at the LAMM sign onto a track
that leaves the road beside a gatehouse. Follow the track for 1300M
to the Event Centre field beside Torosay Castle.
ARRIVING
ON THE ISLAND SATURDAY MORNING AT 08:15
Please be ready to "run" when you leave the ferry. You
will be directed to registration where you will leave a bag that
we will transport to the Event Centre marquee. We will brief you
about the schedule for the morning but time will be pressing.
AFTER THE
EVENT IS OVER
If you retire early and wish to leave the island on Saturday
your ticket will be valid for any sailing - 12:30, 15:00,
17:00, 19:00
RETURN FERRIES
ON SUNDAY
These will depart at 08:45(950), 11:00(950), 13:00(950), 15:00(950),
16:15 (special - 500), 17:00(950), 19:00(950). There is plenty
of capacity to ensure that all who wish to can leave the island
on Sunday. Members of the public will take priority over LAMM competitors.
LAMM competitors using the LAMM coach, returning on flights or by
other public transport will then take priority over other LAMM competitors
for whom places will be allocated on a first come, first served
basis. If you are not in a rush, please chill at the Event Centre
and allow those who are pressed for time to catch the 15:00 ferry.
PRIZEGIVING
- 13:30
Weather permitting, this will take place in the castle gardens on
the lawn in front of Torosay Castle, otherwise in the marquee. The
prizegiving will be completed by 14:00, leaving plenty of
time for a gentle meander to the 15:00 ferry. If you are
in a hurry, we suggest that you deposit your bags by the field fence
on your way to the Castle gardens, ready for an efficient departure
after the prizegiving.
TRAINS ON
SUNDAY TO THE FERRY AT CRAIGNURE
The weekend would not be complete without the option to take a train
on the Isle of Mull steam railway from Torosay Station to Craignure.
There are two trains that carry 90 and 70 people respectively. We
have some extra services and trains will depart at: 10:40, 12:10(for
13:00 ferry), 12:20(for 13:00 ferry), 14:10(for 15:00 ferry), 14:25(for
15:00 ferry), 14:50(for 16:15 ferry), 15:30(for 16:15 ferry), 16:10(for
17:00 ferry), 16:20(for 17:00 ferry). The train journey is 15
minutes and it is a 10 minute walk to the ferry from
Craignure station. As you depart from the Event Centre field walking
to the ferry, a marshal will hand you a train ticket if there is
spare capacity on the next train connecting with the ferry you wish
to catch. On your way to the train you will deposit your large rucksack
in a trailer as both you and the rucksack will not fit on the small
train. You will retrieve your rucksack from the vehicle near the
ferry departure pier at Craignure.
CATCHING
FLIGHTS/PUBLIC TRANSPORT FROM GLASGOW
If you arrive on the LAMM coach you will receive a priority voucher,
which allows you to move to the front of queue for the 15:00
ferry sailing. The LAMM coach leaves Oban Ferry Terminal at 16:00
and so anyone who intends to use the coach must be on the 15:00
ferry or earlier. If you are using other public transport, please
collect a priority voucher at the LAMM Information desk after registration
or on Sunday from the LAMM shop. Please do not take advantage
of the system - these vouchers are ONLY for those returning by public
transport.
CATCHING
THE COACH FROM OBAN TO GLASGOW AIRPORT
The coach will depart from a location very close to where you were
dropped off. This will be pointed out to you on Friday evening.
It is imperative that we get the coach loaded and on its way to
Glasgow ASAP after you arrive at Oban.
DIRECTIONS
FROM THE FERRY TO THE LAMM CAR PARK
Refer to the directions above describing your original journey to
the ferry. Follow the Lochgilphead road, signed from Argyll
Square. After 600M TL by the Job Centre. After 100M, TR onto Glenfoot
Terrace and bear right through the school to the LAMM car park.
